The Day My Mother Left by James Prosek
Time: 4:43 AM

What do you do when your mother leaves with another man? this is exactly the dilemma of nine year old jeremy. This book tells of how his childlike mind tries to grasp the implications of his mother's leaving and tries understand it all. he seeks solace in his drawings, trying to recreate the book of birds- a book filled with drawings of birds which his mom took when she left. What is especially poignant about this book is that it is devoid of the usual descriptions of the sadness the protagonist feels, instead the author artfully uses simple metaphors to illustrate Jeremy's confusion and feelings that the reader has to read carefully to comprehend. It is a book devoid of self-pity as other books of similar topics tend to veer off to. What is more commendable about this book is the fact that it relates very closely to the author's own experience when his parents went through a similar separation. I would recommend this book to be used in literature classes as its words are filled with double meanings that might need a careful analysis by students to decipher and the relationship between the characters leave much to be discussed and studied. The book is deceptive in the way that the author uses simple sentences (to illustrate the child's mind) and so upon first glance appears to be a book for young readers. However this book is suitable for both advanced readers and young readers too.Mr James Prosek has truly captured the poignancy of a child's pain and confusion when parents separate.
Verdict: Must-Read!!!
